Scratch-board is a three layer medium that is made up of a support foundation (either heavy paper or masonite panel) which is then coated with smooth white clay and then a very fine layer of black India ink. This leaves the artist a solid black panel to start with. They then scratch through the black to expose the white clay below creating a white impression on the black board.
